Another Camp Feral! Conbook submission. I won’t be able to get the final mascot (air) done.

I've had this one done for a while though, but held off submitting it until my scanner had arrived and I could scan the mofo. Well… the whole scanning thing didn’t work out too well, so I took a picture instead again. *le sigh*

Which brings me to my next topic of interest. You’re all probably wondering about the whole Sepia Tone thing here too, huh? Well, that was caused by the yellow light from my desk lamp that I used to illuminate this photo. I have another version of this as well, where as I used natural lighting as opposed to artificial. But, I actually really enjoyed the effect of this one, plus it had less of a glare on it and the whole red tint thing kinda fits the character. So Sepia Tone ftw!!

I think I made a lot of progress and a lot of mistakes in this one. Obvious spots of distress are the entirety of that god forsaken right side arm. I had nice and sweaty palms while drawing this and touched the elbow accidentally, which caused a permanent smudge that I could barely work through. I had to shade the entire background to mask the damn blemish, so all I can say is that it used to look way better. The hand on top is complete BS too... Finally are the legs, I have a natural inability for drawing legs. And oh yeah, feet = total failure.

Some things I did like however. I felt that I kinda, sorta managed to get a little bit of a distant, “fuzzy” effect on the tail, which I’ve seen done many times before but never attempted to mesh in my own artwork. But, the real bitch of this drawing was getting the two strong light sources to work well with each other, and I felt I tackled that one alright. Also, I was happy with my ability to draw the musculature on the upper torso too, but the “peck” was a bit too much, and even made worse by the extreme lighting, and I’ve had “untrained eyes” tell me it’s a boobie. D: Finally, I thought the fire looked kinda descent, but mainly because I never draw fire.

In gist, a lot of new things were done in this one, some of it was a bit of a failure, some of it was a partial success… but all in all, it was progress.

I used 9X12 Canson plate/smooth Bristol paper, a .5 mechanical pencil (HB, 2B)

I AM (DEVIANT), THEREFORE I AM (DEVIOUS)!

Thanks a lot man, for the +fav and everything!

I've still got a lot to learn, so progress is what I'm always striving for every time I put my pencil to paper. You can expect me to never give up trying to make every image better than the last. And all I'm hoping for is that I can keep people interested in my artwork by providing them with a new variety of techniques and imagery, every time I submit.

Thanks again.

Feet complete failure my ass. They're alright... <3

And hey man, nice one yet again. You really into that Camp Feral huh, awesome detail as always, DUDE. : D

Well done again! I think your shading looks great, even with the two light sources and all, you managed to make it just right. And I like the sepia tone too, heh. I also think that even when it's so simple, the background shading gives a sense of depth to the pic, this is definitely better with the shaded background. The right hand looks especially good with the way you made the fingers visible through the fire.

Well, that's all I can think of right now! : D

Yeah, it was the first and only furry convention I even went too. Though I don't view myself as a furry, I had the time of my life while I was thre and I have never been sorrounded by so man artists before, especially ones that appreciate my artwork. I won't be making it this year becuase the army is full of fail and lame. I had my heart set on going to it too. :(

Thanks for the comment, and I'm just happy to finally get some artwork up again.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments. :D Like I said before, I was pleased with the results of the two light sources. I tend to avoid that stuff like the plague because it's a complete headache to work with two extreme light sources in such close proximity to the subject. Of course it's nothing close to perfect, but to reiterate, it’s progress.

The background was necessary because of the ugly smudges I made that I couldn't erase... so I masked them the best I could and tried not to make it look *too* bad. That’s the ugly nature of working with traditional mediums, because you can make them totally FUBAR in a single outstanding moment of lameness, and then you have to figure out how to salvage your work. But, it's not always a bad thing because it can serve to make things more natural and original looking.

Digital artist are allowed all the mistakes in the world, becuase their artwork is really only a directed reflection of their knowledge of the program that they happen to be using. I respect a lot of digital artwork because it *does* rely on a certain level of artistic ability and mindset to make something look appealing, original, and creative. But, I respect traditional artwork a lot more and will always try to be faithful to it.

Again, I thank you kindly for all your gracious words.

Yer quite welcome, my man!

Wow! I like his facial expression and eyes most of all. There's just something about them. You did a great job on this Bryan. I really don't see any problem with your art at all. It's absolutely wonderful! :)

PS, Huzzah for braided hair! Yeee.... :XD:
:iconlupinator:
Yeah, he just seems way too happy doesn't he? And, I really liked the eyes too *G*

Thanks for the kind words and I'm overall pretty happy with this one, becuase it broke some ground for me in artwork. But some of the errors are still kinda blaring.

This was a pretty fun drawing for me, I think I should do some more tribal stuff? You think? Only issue is that my art doesn't have a very natural, tribal feeling to it.
:iconleopreston:
Naaw, he seems just right, and I really didn't notice any errors until I read your description, so it's not that bad at all.

I agree, you should do more tribal stuff! And if you're worried about the lack of natural feeling, you should perhaps completely discard the worry whilst you do it, and see what happens. Experimentation is a good thing! ^_^
